Promotion to Full Professor!

I received the happy news last Tuesday that I had been promoted to (full) Professor at Kenyon. I am very pleased to have this high honor. I really think that Kenyon, unlike virtually all other liberal arts colleges I am aware of, has stayed true to its mission of providing the best possible undergraduate experience for its students and I am proud to contribute to that mission.

Individuals seldom deserve all the credit even for individual honors. In this case, I have to share the honor with Tom Greenslade and John Idoine, now emeritus professors of physics, for sharing their years of teaching experience with a “newbie” seventeen years ago (before the word “newbie” even existed). Ben Schumacher and Paula Turner also deserve credit for so generously sharing their insights into teaching, learning, and building a strong department.

And, of course, no part of my contributions to Kenyon would be possible without the support of my loving wife, Kristina. In addition to our many discussions of teaching and, more importantly, what makes a life worth living, she has given a geek a heart. For without a heart, all of an individual’s life work adds up to nothing.

Tim, I just found your blog from the Physics department website. This is fantastic news! You deserve every bit of it.

Congratulations, and glad to see you’re doing well (albeit on the other side of the planet).

    Best,
    Brian
